Cards fan here… Loved the article though we have plenty of gaffe’s ( especially on the base paths ) too. I admire the Pirate’s from afar and am ready to root for them if they make it further in the post season than the Cards!

Simple question: exactly what IS the third base coach doing with a runner (a near-rookie with baserunning issues, no less) on third in that situation? “Atta boy”? “Swing, Batter, Batter”? I played ball. I know coaches. They are cliche machines. Nary an original word from their mouths. But there’s a reason for them saying the same thing over and over and over. Because in the heat of the moment (cliche??) even the most focused, gifted of natural athletes could NOT help but be helped by a reminder of what is about to unfold and how he should respond. I place 95% of the blame on that man, unless and until video replay establishes that he told the kid to break on contact and the kid just whiffed.
