As a Calgary fan living in Toronto I’m wondering what Phil Kessel these Penguin fans are talking about. Just wait until the honeymoon is over and Kessel starts to float every second or third game. Toronto media might be overbearing but their fans are overly patient. Every year they pay the most for tickets to watch an underachieving product on the ice, and every year they start the year giving the team the benefit of the doubt, just to be let down again. Remember that it’s not just Toronto that soured on the Kessel experiment, Boston was just as eager to get rid of him.

Great article on a great trade by the Penguins, but I’ve watched nearly every game Kessel’s played and it’s worth noting he won’t be “one timing” goals.
He uses a flex and kickpoint on his hockey stick that is the equivalent of a wet noodle for most players. It enables his amazing wrist shot release, but it’s a trade off. He fans on my one timers than any elite goal scorer I’ve ever seen, and he doesn’t have a slapshot to speak of.
Minor point but worth knowing. Enjoy Phil. He was in the 30-40 goal, 80pt range with Tyler Bozak as his center, very curious to see just how high he tracks with a Malkin or Crosby, and potentially playing against second line competition instead of the toughest matchups.

Dont like to chime in on hockey much, but read a lot of good comments here. Read some of the Toronto media stuff too, with their fans comments.

Sounds like the plan should be to put Kessel on Crosby’s wing and tell him to shoot and score. Expecting him to backcheck, expecting him to do Crossfit everyday with Gary Roberts might be asking too much. Put him in a position to utilize his strengths. Plain and simple. And maybe, under less pressure he flourishes, stays away from Primantis and doesnt mind doing Ball Wall up in Cranberry on occasion.

I think the Pens should be actively lobbying the league for the Hurricanes first round pick next year because of their comments directly related to the sale of the team. It seems like just compensation for erratic and potentially costly comments made by another teams owner.

Toronto previously practiced an outdated NHL mentality and a lot of figures in the NHL have jealousy of the Pens. I think we all wondered why Rutherford who is so open with everyone did not tell everyone Maata and Pouliot were not on the table. I think if he said they were untouchables another team would had upped their offer.

great to see that the pens got their guy without giving up that coveted d man thankfully GMJR stuck to his guns because after reading many comments from the toronto people it was a sure thing they wanted to trade Kessel almost as much as pitts wanted him

For whatever reason, professional jealousy, perceived whining by our franchise, or just hatred, the Penguins get called out nationally by a lot of people. Bobby Clarke, Peter Karmonos, Kerry Fraser, Randy Carlyle and of course John Tortella. Some are in the heat of the moment after games, some are in the off season unsolicited. I think it comes down to jealousy and maybe a deeper resentment towards Mario for some reason. Whatever it is, it’s pretty petty….
