How much prospect value will Neil Walker really have with only one year remaining at well over $10m?

One year of Howie Kendrick got the Angels Andrew Heaney, a good-not-great LHP prospect. Can't imagine Walker would fetch any more than that, given age, salary, and production comparisons.

I'd be just fine getting as much solid production out of Neil Walker as his contract allows, and then collecting a First Round draft pick as qualifying offer compensation after he signs elsewhere long term.

Maybe not quite as dramatic, but don't forget about how all the "intangible" comments clouded fans sense of how much Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez were worth when they were traded.

Made no objective sense to extend either of them at the time, and history has clearly shown that to be the correct decision. Neither guy earned another contract they were given once leaving the Pirates.

I like Neal...but honestly his back issues etc. scare me too much for a long term deal. He may be better served as a DH in the AL. Lots of money for those types.

Anybody who considers MM a credible source for baseball analysis likely also considers Nickelodeon a credible source for current events.

It is precisely because Nutting runs the Pirates as a business and not a hobby that everyone in the organization is on the same page with the same singular objectives and philosophies that have enabled the Pirates to go from a joke to a perennial contender.

While I don't disagree that this town will be in an uproar if the Pirates don't extend Walker. They really should be outraged if they don't trade him next offseason. Walker would bring some solid prospects to keep the Pirate system stocked which is the only way for low revenue teams to survive in the tilted playing field that is MLB were the rich keep getting richer and the little guys struggle to find ways to compete.

What's the big deal Re Walker contract? He'll be 30 at the end of 2016 season. Look at Phillies problems with contracts to 32-35 YO players. We have Hansen coming up. We have Kang. We have other you get players to sign.
