Nutting: Martin approach will be big-time

The Pirates plan to approach catcher Russell Martin with an extension offer that will be “beyond rational,” owner Bob Nutting just told DKonPittsburghSports.com at field level at PNC Park.

No offer has been made to this point, Nutting said, because “we want Russ focused on this.” He motioned toward the batting cage as he spoke. The Pirates and Giants are playing in the National League wild card game tonight.

This site has reported consistently for two months that ownership and the front office had met regarding Martin with a goal of keeping him in Pittsburgh for the long term. No numbers have been acknowledged publicly, but Nutting playfully challenged me to take a guess at a number, then added, “Whatever that is, stretch it out to here, then out to here, then out to here.” He moved his hands apart further with each repetition.

Martin’s current contract, paying $17 million over two years, expires after this season. He can opt for free agency in November and has strongly suggested he plans to do so.
